What would Google look like if marketing managers and CEOs got involved? Probably a lot different than today's simple focus on search... Warning: the video may shock sensitive viewers.

Earlier we wrote on this blog that Google is a classic example of focusing on your top tasks.

This is what Google would look like if the average web manager, marketing manager, advertising guru or CEO had a say in it. (Granted, it’d look more polished and glitzy but the content wouldn’t differ so much.)

How did we come to this conclusion? Crank up your speakers and watch the 3 minute video with commentary by my lovely colleague Karl Gilis. You’ll never look at your own homepage the same way again…

Credit where credit is due

All the credit for this example goes to Gerry McGovern who shows a similar version in his seminars.

My colleague Karl and I are sometimes told by customers that we’re not exactly subtle when it comes to stating our opinions. Some people have even gone so far as to call us slightly rude.

Rude? Us? Compared to Gerry McGovern we’re sissies.

2 quotes and 1 mantra that every webteam should say out loud 10 times every morning before they start work.

Quotes
“Online branding is bullshit. People talking about branding today are bullshitters. The customer doesn’t care about your brand.”

Ouch, an inconvenient truth…

“I would never let an advertising agency make my website. Even if they were the last company on earth, I would not let them make my website.”

Don’t hold back now, Gerry!

Mantra
“We are not the center of the universe. The customer is.”

I could not agree more.

Subscribe to Gerry’s newsletter on http://www.gerrymcgovern.com/new_thinking.htm.
You won’t regret it.
